I can say without a shred of doubt that this has been one of the most fun literary experiences of 2014 and I love this book madly.
The title comes from the most legit super weapon ever invented--the "Go-Away Bomb", which is intended to destroy the bad guys. And destroy them it does, because the not only does the bomb decimate those guys in an instant, it actually makes information cease to exist altogether in the area it infects. YEA WHAT?? LOL. Nuts. So, a side-effect of "going away" is the creation of nebulous "Stuff", which responds to thoughts and memories in a person's mind--it makes those thoughts real. The result is weird and dream-like creatures whose weirdness is only limited by the depths of weird in your own weirdo brain. If you can think it, it will materialize, eventually. Bonkers.
There's a pipe that keeps the stuff away by spritzing FOX (anti-stuff), but it breaks and the good guys come to fix it. The main characters are a bunch of kooks--smart and interesting and very very funny, but we never get to know the main character's name. He is Gonzo's pal. Their friendship is exquisite.
Harkaway reads like "relatable sci-fi" Douglas Coupland and hilarious Douglas Adams and also like "I don't fully get it but it sounds sweet and I trust you" Neal Stephenson.
Ugh. I read this book so hard and I am still sore.
Perfectly planned and executed piece of literature. I rate this book twelve out of twelve happy pups. Very British and a big smooch on the brain.
